Scylla cleanup mission on the French Atlantic coast
- Organization: Wings of the Ocean
- Category: Environment
- Location: France, Atlantic coast
- Duration: 200 days
Information
Our Atlantic mission, aboard the Scylla, consists in carrying out clean-ups and awareness raising while sailing from port to port on the French Atlantic coast.

Formerly called Antwerp Flyer, this 28m aluminum exploration sailboat is specially designed for the northern seas. It was renamed Scylla to match the Kraken, both named after sea creatures.
A different approach to raising awareness
Awareness and education are at the heart of the project. Indeed, the Scylla mission is the first mission at Wings to have an educational manager. The Scylla crew, composed of 12 to 14 people, is involved in schools, colleges, high schools and social centers.

It raises awareness among the general public through various events and actions (film-debates, stands, festivals...). Being in contact with many other sailing enthusiasts during its stopovers, the crew also has the opportunity to raise awareness among neighboring ships to adopt more respectful behaviors for the oceans in order to become eco-responsible sailors.

This includes consumption on board, waste management and the use of non-polluting products.
Finally, Scylla's challenge is to show that it is possible to navigate in a more ecological way, with a collective that is committed to sobriety throughout the mission.

Plastic pollution on the French Atlantic coast
The clean-up operations aim to reduce the amount of waste that ends up on the shoreline and in the ocean. These operations consist in manually collecting the waste present on the littorals and to characterize them.

Very little data is available on the state of plastic pollution on the French Atlantic coast. Clean-up operations, through the characterization of waste, allow the establishment of data on the nature of waste and help to understand their origins (geographical and economic activity sector). These data are listed on a national participatory network, which allows us to contribute to the study of waste issues on a larger scale.

Volunteers
This mission exists thanks to the commitment of dozens of volunteers. When they come on board, the volunteers are housed, fed, laundered and live together daily. They come from all walks of life, occupations and training and are of all ages.

Scylla 2022-2023
In 2022, during 6 months, the crew of the Scylla carried out 80 clean-ups and 129 awareness actions from Pasaïa (Spain) to La Rochelle (France).

In 2023, we're launching Mission Scylla and embarking on a journey to fight the global pollution of our planet. Support our project and become part of the Scylla mission. Together we will save the world from plastic pollution!
